2020 Blog #3 - Marketing, marketing, marketing...

To race costs money. It costs money to pay the team for their support. It costs money to buy your race car. Travel to and from the circuit. Tyres. Fuel. And then there is the replacement parts bill for when your race car falls to bits...


Hopefully the latter won't happen and your car will be cared for and maintained by your team, and you are a good enough driver that you will by it's own nature drive the car sympathetically to it's working parts. And I don't mean slow when I say this. Great drivers can drive fast and look after their cars.


So who's going to pay for this? Well, either you pay for it yourself or you wrap a commercial package around Motorsport and make it pay for itself. Either way, as a driver you are well advised to create a brand image.


If nothing else, it's good fun and you're gaining valuable skills. I love marketing. I've always embraced it since starting my businesses. I attribute most of my success to marketing and brand image. Pictures speak a thousand words. Using the right imagery is where you create your first impression. This sets up everything for what follows.


Since 2018, Riviera Blue has been my brand colour. It's the base colour for my race cars. Which is why you will see the 2020 car in a fabulous RB livery. And to add to this in 2020, if you've read blog #2, my helmet also sports an RB design.




For 2020 we're pushing it a bit further. While in 2018 we started a documentary style film to capture the season it didn't quite go to plan. Disappointingly the bulk of the season was missed. We're giving it another go this year, capturing as many of the race weekends as possible. It's a fly on the wall style filming process producing short edits. Nothing fancy.



The branding has changed this year too. We have an "ident" and a "stinger". No idea what either of those meant until this week. Here they are for the avoidance of doubt..
